College first cut evaluation

College Promotional Video First Cut Evaluation

Content/mise en scene

The reason I decided to make my promo video in this sort of style is because I watched the promotion video that NUA had, so I decided to take inspiration from that as I thought it was a good interesting video.
One of the things that helped make the interview stand out and look good was the fact that the interviewee is passionate and clear about the subject that is being talked about, this helps to make it alot more appealing to people watching it. I should have used more shots that showed photography students doing their work and a lot more shots showing the actual photography classroom, etc. Instead of having footage of what's on display in the corridor which is mainly other things such as art and graphic design. Also the reason I decided to interview erin was because as the teacher he is able to discuss what things the students do and because he is passionate about this subject he is able to make it sound really inviting. Which is helpful to aim towards the secondary target audience, the parents.

Camera work

The different styles of shots I used were quite simple as they were all mainly just stills or some sort of panning shot. So I could of experimented abit more with the types of camera work I used. For the shots where the interviewee was in the frame the rule of thirds was used, this means the position in which the person's eyes were placed, in my video they were nearer the top of the screen which helps makes the look taller and not short. I also took the direct positioning approach of the interviewee as they were facing directly at the camera, when feedback was given on the video multiple people mentioned I could of used third person instead so the person would be facing to the side of the camera and not directly at the screen. For the camera movements I only used slower movements instead of quick ones, this is because it went with what I was trying to do better. Most of the shots I took were from a close distance so the audience could get a closer look at the things I was showing.

Editing and use of post-production effects

Some of the transitions could have been better as there was some that didn't really fit in as well as others could have. Some of the shots were left a bit to long, they could have been shortened more so I could then include more shorter one so it would look better. Some of the transitions could have been different especially one that is in around the middle of the video, where I have tried to use like a white flash transition but it doesn't look good. When editing Erins interview i used a cutaway this meant adding in another different clip in between the interview to interrupt the continuously filmed action of Erin talking.

Sound

The music that I used worked well and fitted into the video well, which everybody in the classroom also agreed with. I also used a technique where the sound could be heard before the you could see the person that was speaking. It was also loud and clear and no words were muffled or anything. To record the sound I just used a small mic that attached to the top of the camera.

Graphics

The graphics I used to create the banner to introduce Erin works well and is clear, as well as fitting in with the background. The title at the beginning of the video could be changed slightly into maybe a different colour and also made in a bigger font size so its stands out more, as at the moment it is kind of small in the corner of the screen.

  1. title - college promotional video first cut evaluation

Content/mise-en-scene - begin with a focus focus on the good rather than straight into the problems. Also explain why you decided to do it all in the way you did in the first place, perhaps with reference to other promo videos that you have seen. Why did you decide also to focus on a teacher interview rather than students? Why Erin?

Camerawork - discuss the movement you used (slow crabbing, slow zooms etc and why you used them. Also remember about camera angle and shot distance - mention close ups, medium shots, long shots, high or low angles etc. Analyse a couple of specific shots

Editing - also perhaps discuss pace, and name some more specific transitions - cuts, fades or dissolves. Mention the term “cutaway” when discussing how you tried to disguise the editing of Erin’s interview

Sound - explain the technology you used - in camera mic, or something else?

Otherwise good - just would be better with more detailed analysis of particular shots using correct technical terms.
